Dear colleagues, We are happy to invite you at the Second Eastern European Conference on Rare Diseases and Orphan Drugs “FOSTERING RESEARCH ON RARE DISEASES IN EASTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES” The conference will be carried out on 8-9 September 2006 in the beautiful town of Plovdiv (Bulgaria) under the auspices of the Bulgarian Ministry of Health and Mayor of Plovdiv. It is organized by the Information Centre for Rare Diseases and Orphan Drugs - a project of the Bulgarian Association for Promotion of Education and Science. This event is a logical continuation of the very successful First Eastern European Conference on Rare Diseases and Orphan Drugs, which took place on 27 May 2005 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The aim of this first and very important conference was to raise governmental and public awareness in Eastern Europe on rare diseases and orphan drugs. All presentations are available online in video and PDF form giving free access to all interested parties. Up to know, the conference website is accessed by 3 500 unique visitors from more than 80 countries! A media report on the event is also available online, illustrating the high level of interest in the topic, shown by the press, TV and radio. Now, we have decided to invite researchers and teams from Eastern Europe to present their research on rare diseases and orphan drugs by oral presentations and posters. The scientific committee consists of prominent scientists with extensive experience on the topic. A special panel session with invited speakers from leading EU and USA institutions will increase the knowledge of attendees and will present to them the best standards and practices on rare diseases research. Support for researchers and patient representatives from low-income countries is foreseen. Differences in healthcare systems in Europe lead to a fragmented clinical research that reduces the patient’s enrolment in clinical studies and increases the total costs of clinical research, especially concerning rare diseases. So, it is expected that the 2nd Eastern European Conference on Rare Diseases and Orphan Drugs will bridge scientists, patients and industry and will become a valuable source of information of type and quality of ongoing research on rare diseases and orphan drugs in Eastern European countries. Welcome to Bulgaria and attend this important rare diseases scientific event!
Sincerely yours, Assoc. Prof. Rumen Stefanov, MD, PhD On behalf of the Organization Committee
